The Book of Eli
Summary: In a violent post-apocalyptic society, the drifter Eli has been wandering west across North America for the last thirty years reading a unique book that he brings with him. He survives hunting small animals and seeking goods in destroyed houses and vehicles to trade in villages for water and supplies. When he reaches the village ruled by the powerful mobster Carnegie, the man offers a job to Eli to join his gang. Carnegie presses his blind lover Claudia to send her daughter Solara to convince Eli spending the night with him. The girl sees the book of Eli, and when Carnegie beats up on Claudia, she reveals that Eli has the sought book. Carnegie sends his gang to take the book from Eli, but the man is up for protecting the book with his life.I’ve actually never heard of this movie until they played it while I was at a graduation party. The graphics and setting are well done because the world is desert-like wherever you go. Water is an absolute luxury because there are only three total places in North America where people can get some. But water is extremely pricey since it’s in short supply. Every person in this movie is dirty because not everyone is able to get a hold of some water in order to clean themselves. With that said, alcoholic wipes are also rare and are the only thing used for bathing because shampoo and soap seem as if they don’t exist. Also, there is an unbelievable shortage of food and livestock so thugs actually ambush, kill and eat travelers. The whole atmosphere is similar to that in Wall-E because both are filled with pollution. Everything about it is a little scary because it’s possible that the pollution-filled atmosphere portrayed in the movie can become our future.
This movie clarifies the fact that everyone takes things for granted. We don’t know how blessed we are to sleep in a nice, comfy bed, to enjoy eating good food, to have a roof over our heads, and to have clean water whenever we need it. When you think about it, there are people that don’t have those things right now, but this movie emphasizes those main things and it will change your perspective. Overall, the Book of Eli is definitely a one-of-a-kind movie. I actually thought it was going to be longer, but the whole concept is very interesting. I highly recommend.
